Prosecutors on Wednesday asked a judge to sentence a 17-year-old boy to between 22 and 55 years in prison

The defendant apologized to the court and said he regretted his actions, his public attorney, Tyler Gaston, told the judge that his client’s behavior was caused by side effects of an asthma medication he was taking, causing mood swings, night terrors, and hallucinations, the report said. The teacher has not returned to work and told the judge he felt “trapped” both mentally and physically since the attack after classes ended in April 2022.

The boy was arrested later that day and the woman was treated for an unspecified number of injuries

Las Vegas police said the teacher was beaten and strangled, and after the student fled the high school campus, another school employee spotted the teacher and called police and medical authorities. The school is located a few miles east of downtown Las Vegas and serves approximately 2,000 students. The attack was one of many examples of school violence that led to the Nevada Legislature’s passage and Republican Governor Joe Lombardo’s signing into law this year called the Safe and Supportive Schools Act more complete.
