New Minimum Wage in Nevada Increases to $11.25 Until $12 Next Year

Some residents in Nevada will receive a new minimum wage of $11.25 beginning July 1. In 2019, lawmakers passed legislation to gradually increase the minimum wage every year until it reaches $12 in 2024.

On July 1, some residents of Nevada will receive a new minimum wage of $11.25 as it will experience a slight increase from $10.50. Reports say in 2019, lawmakers of the state passed legislation to gradually increase the minimum wage every year it reaches $12 in 2024.

According to Lyle, organizers of the new minimum wage urged for a $15 increase by 2024. However, the leaders of the Democratic legislative believe that the $12 is the acceptable rate for business groups that disagreed with the legislation.

As a result, after working an average of 40 hours per week, the $11.25 new minimum wage amounts to around $23,000 before taxes every year. Reportedly, Nevada will also abolish its two-tiered system which will allow employers who provide health insurance to pay $1 less per hour.

Nevada’s New Minimum Wage

Unfortunately, according to Ross, the new minimum wage in Nevada is smaller in comparison to the changes in other U.S. states. For instance, the minimum wage in Oregon will increase to $14.20 from $13.50 per hour. The city of Portland, however, will have a separate increase of $15.45.

On the contrary, Nevada cannot implement individual wage increases without approval from the legislation since the state follows Dillon’s rule. This rule is a governing principle that limits local authorities only to actions that are authorized by the state they belong to.
