Private Home Gardens Growing Produce Not Required to Be Registered, USDA Says

A viral video on Instagram showed a man claiming that private home gardens must be registered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The USDA announced that there is a voluntary registration program, but it only includes gardens in communities.

On June 4, a video on Instagram showed a man talking about the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and private home gardens. Reportedly, the man was claiming that the USDA requires individuals to register their home gardens on the government’s website.

An article in USA Today states that the viral Instagram video gained over 13,000 likes in two weeks. Other versions of the video were also posted on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Apart from home gardens, the owner of the video also makes several other false claims including the government’s intention to burn down food production sites and inject mRNA vaccines into livestock to vaccinate citizens unknowingly.

Home Gardens Not Required

According to an article in Yahoo Finance, the USDA announced that it does not require any individual to register their home gardens that are growing produce. There is a voluntary registration program for community gardens called the “People’s Garden Initiative”. In 2022, the USDA reinstituted the People’s Garden Initiative. However, the program’s website states that it cannot be home gardens that are located on private properties.
