On June 23, at around 1 a.m., the officers from Ventura Police Department in California received a report from the employees of Agostino’s Bakery in the 4200 block of Transport Street. The employees stated that they allegedly heard a woman screaming in a nearby alley.

According to Vacchiano, upon approaching the woman, the employees saw her remove her pants and give birth to a baby. Thereafter, the woman placed the newborn on the ground, cut the umbilical cord, and immediately ran away from the scene.

Fortunately, the onlookers rushed to the baby who appeared to be healthy. One bystander wrapped the baby up in the mother’s pants, while others brought a blanket and an apron. The baby was then transported to a hospital and is in stable condition to date.

An article in NBC Los Angeles states that the California police officers searched for the mother of the baby but were unable to locate her. They believe that the woman may be homeless, so the officers reminded the public that the state has a Safe Surrender program. The program is where within 72 hours after birth, a child can be safely surrendered in secret without fear of prosecution.
