WINTERGREEN, Va. — A Maryland man was arrested for assaulting two men and fatally shooting a police officer Friday night in the Nelson County community of Wintergreen.
Virginia State Police said Daniel Barmak, 23, of Towson, was charged with the felony murder of police officer Mark Christopher Wagner II in Wintergreen
The incident started around 10:00 P.M. Friday, Wintergreen Police received a 911 call that Barmak assaulted two other adult men at the apartment they were all staying in on Arrowwood Lane. After calling police, the two injured men both 23, fled. Wagner, 31, arrived first and met Barmak in the woods. Police said Barmak shot the officer dead after an argument over Wagner’s handgun. Barmak was also shot during this encounter.
Wintergreen Police and the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office took Mr. Barmak into custody without issue
State police found illegal drugs in the apartment. Wagner’s station-issued handgun was recovered at the scene in the woods. At the request of Wintergreen Police Chief Dennis Russell, the Appomattox Field Office of the Virginia Police Department of Criminal Investigation is investigating the case. Wagner’s body was taken to the coroner’s office for examination and autopsy.
