Dad of Teen Shot to Death in CHOP Zone Files Lawsuit Against City of Seattle

Antonio Mays, Sr. filed a lawsuit against Seattle after his son, Antonio Mays, Jr., was shot to death in the city’s CHOP Zone. Mays Jr.’s death, along with another teenager, prompted the zone’s shutdown in 2020.

Antonio Mays, Sr., the father of Antonio Mays, Jr., filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Seattle following the death of his son on June 29, 2020. The lawsuit states that Seattle was aware of the violence in the CHOP Zone but had neglected the area.

According to Parks, Mays, Jr., then 16, had traveled from California to Seattle in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Reports say protesters occupied the CHOP Zone weeks after George Floyd was killed by a police officer in May of that year. Unfortunately, during a protest, Mays, Jr. was also shot to death.

Mays, Jr. Shot in CHOP Zone

According to DeGregory, Mays, Jr. was shot to death by a substitute security team of “Chop Cops” trained by the Seattle Police. In addition, the city’s paramedics also allegedly abandoned the CHOP Zone as civilians attempted to get Mays, Jr. the medical attention he required.

Reports say nine days before Mays, Jr.’s death, another young man was also killed in the CHOP Zone. Due to both teenagers’ deaths, the city of Seattle was then prompted to shut down the protest zone on July 1, 2020.
