Prosecutor Calls for the Trial of the Argentina VP Assassination Attempt Suspects

Prosecutor Carlos Alberto Rivolo, who leads the investigation of the failed VP assassination attempt against Vice President Cristina Fernández called for the three detained suspects to face trial.

According to Rivolo, they have not found any evidence so far that points to political financing or planning of the VP assassination attempt, AP News reported.

The prosecutor said the primary investigation into the VP assassination attempt was over and told the judge in charge of the case, María Eugenia Capuchetti, to bring the three detained suspects to trial.

Rivolo stated that it is important to note that so far, all the collected evidence does not endorse the existence of any kind of organization, political party, or partisan individuals or groups who may have financed, planned, covered up, or in any way contributed to the VP assassination attempt.

Prosecutor Rivolo said the investigation should continue separately to find out about the possible involvement of others in the VP assassination attempt. This is to avoid extending the procedural situation of the detained individuals accused and detained, who are currently denied freedom.

The main suspect in the VP assassination attempt is Fernando Sabag Montiel, his girlfriend Brenda Uliarte, and Nicolás Carrizo.

Fernando Sabag Montiel was accused of attempting to open fire outside the home of Fernández last year.  Television images from the scene showed how the gun trigger was pulled and how the bullet failed to leave the gun’s chamber.

According to the prosecutor, the three detained suspects planned the VP assassination attempt and there is clearly no evidence that says the suspects received financing nor they were following orders for the failed assassination.

Vice President Fernández, a former president (2007-2015) harshly criticized the decision of the prosecutor, including the justice system as a whole, saying there didn’t seem to be any interest in scrutinizing who could have been behind the Sept. 1, 2022 assassination attempt.

Fernández criticized prosecutor Rivolo’s decision and said that he completely disregards assessing everything related to the VP assassination attempt which could point to people beyond Uliarte, Sabag Montiel, and Carrizo.

Fernández and her supporters have criticized the prosecutor and other judicial officials throughout the investigation. The vice president had even pointed out some leaders of the opposition team for their potential involvement in the VP assassination attempt but they feel ignored by the prosecutor and other judicial officials.

President Alberto Fernández has insisted on several occasions that the justice system expedite the investigation into those who may be behind the failed VP assassination attempt.
