On May 26, officials of Long Beach, California announced that they have started issuing the first batch of payments under the city’s Guaranteed Income Pilot program. Reportedly, $500 worth of monthly payments will be distributed to selected families every month for a year. To date, there are already 250 families receiving the payments.

An article in Long Beach Post states that the city is collaborating with the California State University Long Beach in studying how the selected families used the payments received. Almost two years after Long Beach first announced its Guaranteed Income Pilot program, it aimed to assess the effectiveness of it. This is because the results could help inform how to administer similar programs in the future.

Who will qualify for the Guaranteed Income Pilot program?

According to an article in CBS News, to be able to qualify for the Guaranteed Income Pilot program, an individual must reside in Long Beach, California and have children. In addition, the individual must earn below 100% of the federal poverty line and have only one income earner in their household.

To date, the city received 2,800 applications for the Guaranteed Income Pilot program. Among the 250 families that were selected, a total of 937 individuals will benefit, 583 of whom are children. Reportedly, through the Long Beach Recovery Act, the city is using $2 million of the COVID-19 stimulus funds received from the federal government to finance the program.
