The family of Christina Yuna Lee filed a lawsuit against NYPD police officers for the slow response that ultimately led to her death. Reports say the authorities took more than an hour to provide police and medical assistance to Lee who was stabbed to death in 2022.
On May 12, the family of Christina Yuna Lee, then 35, filed a lawsuit in New York County Supreme Court against unnamed officers of the New York City Police Department (NYPD). The lawsuit accuses the NYPD police officers of unlawfully failing to thwart the assault and battery on the victim. In addition, the officers also allegedly delayed the medical assistance she required which ultimately led to her death.According to Brown, the lawsuit was filed by Lee’s aunt who also acts as her estate’s administrator. Furthermore, Lee’s aunt also identified New York City as a defendant. Nonetheless, the NYPD police officers refused to comment on the pending lawsuit. On the other hand, the law department of New York City states that it is currently reviewing the lawsuit.
NYPD Police Officers’ Neglect
According to Asma-Sadeque, on February 13, 2022, at around 4:21 a.m., Lee was followed by a man who forced his way to her apartment in Manhattan. A neighbor reportedly called the NYPD police officers after hearing her screams a few moments later.
At around 4:25 a.m., two NYPD police officers arrived at Lee’s apartment door and heard her yell for help. However, the lawsuit states the officers only spoke to a man through Lee’s closed door. This means that despite having reason to believe that the victim was in danger, the officers did not provide her with any assistance.
Furthermore, other NYPD police officers did not arrive at the crime scene until around 5:40 a.m., one hour and twenty minutes after Lee was attacked. Upon gaining entry into the victim’s apartment, Lee was already dead with more than 40 stab wounds.
