$360,000 Per Eligible Person Approved by Reparations Task Force in California

Every eligible resident in California is expected to receive a minimum of $360,000 after the approval of the state’s Reparations Task Force. Reports say these reparations are for the descendants of African-Americans who were enslaved in the U.S.

On May 6, a plan to distribute a minimum of $360,000 to every eligible resident in California has been approved by the state’s Reparations Task Force. The plan included a formal apology from the state and billions of dollars worth of payments to compensate the descendants of African-Americans enslaved in the U.S.

According to Blood, the Reparations Task Force was created by the state’s Governor Gavin Newsom in 2020. The final recommendations to the plan will be submitted to the state’s legislators and in turn, they will decide whether and how those will be implemented. If signed by Newsom, the recommendations will then ultimately become law.

Reparations Task Force Budget

According to Lee, five economists were consulted and their initial total cost was estimated to be around $800 billion. Reportedly, this estimation still does not include the compensation for the properties that the victims claimed were unlawfully taken or for the depreciation of the businesses that were owned by a Black.

Unfortunately, the estimation of $800 billion exceeds the state of California’s total yearly budget of $300 billion by around 266%. A University of San Diego School of Law professor and reparations scholar Roy L. Brooks stated that because of the impact of inflation, several recommendations are most likely not going to be approved.
