Lamar Johnson Freed From Prison After 28 Years For Wrongful Conviction

Lamar Johnson was finally set free from prison twenty-eight years after his wrongful conviction. Reports say Johnson was previously convicted for the murder of Markus Boyd in 1995.

Reports say the murder of Markus Boyd happened on the night of October 30, 1994, in St. Louis, Missouri. Boyd was on his front porch, talking to his friend, Greg Elking, when two masked men walked up to them. Boyd was shot to death by the gunmen, but Elking was spared and ran off.

According to Narvaez, when authorities began investigating the murder, they interviewed Boyd’s girlfriend. The woman was reportedly in their apartment upstairs with their daughter when the shooting incident happened. When asked who she suspected was the suspect in the murder, the girlfriend mentioned Lamar Johnson. The woman stated that Johnson had been a longtime friend of Boyd’s, but she thought they had a fallout at that time.

Lamar Johnson Finally Free

According to Mahato, Lamar Johnson was convicted at the age of 21 and was still in prison at the age of 49. Johnson had spent most of his life in prison for the murder he did not commit, but the court had taken twenty-eight years to agree that he was innocent. On February 14, 2023, Lamar Johnson was finally freed from prison in the St. Louis courtroom when Judge David Mason acquitted him.

Reports say when the shooting incident happened, Lamar Johnson insisted that he was at a friend’s house almost three miles away with his girlfriend, Erika Barrow. Barrow stated that Johnson only left the house once to make a transaction. However, as soon as Barrow finished changing their baby’s diaper, Johnson was already back. Minutes after Johnson returned to the house, he allegedly received a call that Boyd was shot.
