On December 7, 2020, Kathleen Sorensen, 31, a social media influencer from California, reported to the police that a Latino couple from Petaluma City attempted to kidnap her two children at a Michael’s craft store. Almost a week later, Sorensen summarized her accusations in two Instagram videos that gained more than 4 million views. However, police stated that the social media influencer’s post contained information that was not revealed in the police report.

According to Acosta, in the Instagram videos, the social media influencer stated that she was being followed by a couple while shopping with her two children. The couple allegedly made comments about her children before trying to approach them in the parking lot. Sorensen added that the man attempted to reach into her child’s stroller before she had screamed for help.

An article in the True Crime Daily states that after the social media influencer’s appearance in TV, the police interviewed her again wherein Sorensen identified the alleged suspects in a surveillance video of the store. Nonetheless, the investigation was closed after it was determined that Sorensen’s report was fake. Later that month, the couple introduced themselves in a press conference as Eddie and Sadie Martinez.

On April 27, the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office stated that the social media influencer was taken into custody and convicted of making a false report of a crime. Sorensen will then face a maximum sentence of six months in prison. In addition, Sorensen’s bail was set at $100,000 while a sentencing date is yet to be scheduled.
