Washington D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee Leaves Post to Join FBI as Cities Across America Battle Rising Crime and Gun Violence.

Robert Contee, the Metropolitan Police Chief of Washington D.C., is leaving his post to join the FBI as the assistant director of the Office of Partner Engagement. In an interview with CBS News before his departure was announced, Contee shared his views on the current crime challenges facing American cities, citing a shortage of officers and an increase in illegal firearms.

On March 6, 2023, Robert Contee, the head of the Metropolitan Police, spoke at a press conference regarding the increase in crime in Washington, D.C.

Concerns about Crime Challenges and Prosecutions

According to Contee, American cities are facing a rise in crime rates, and the shortage of police officers is at a half-century low. He also highlighted the increasing prevalence of illegal firearms, which he believes contribute significantly to violent crime.

Contee expressed his concern about the lack of prosecutions for criminal cases, stating that enforcing the law is only one part of the criminal justice system. Prosecuting cases is equally essential. However, about two-thirds of those detained by the Metropolitan police last year were not charged by the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

Contee emphasized the importance of making sure that police officers work in a supportive environment to attract and retain them. He believes that such a positive environment is necessary to address the current challenges posed by the shortage of officers and the rise of violent crimes.

Contee Joins the FBI

Contee will be joining the FBI after a 32-year career with the Washington D.C. police department, according to NBC. As assistant director of the Office of Partner Engagement, he hopes to address the rising gun violence issues that American cities are currently facing.

Despite the challenges he has faced as the Metropolitan Police Chief, Contee is optimistic that supportive policies for law enforcement will help tackle these problems. While there is still a long way to go in addressing crime challenges in American cities, Contee’s departure marks the beginning of a new chapter in his career, where he will have an opportunity to tackle these issues from a different perspective as part of the FBI.
