Tax Season Kicks Off: San Antonio Residents Get Free Filing Options and Tips to Check Return Status and Request Extensions

Tax season has arrived, and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) started accepting tax returns on January 23, 2023. It is expected that over 168 million tax filings will be submitted to the IRS this year, with the majority of them filed before the April 18 deadline.

The IRS building in Washington DC is the location where US residents must file their income tax returns by April 18, 2019.

Free Ways to File Taxes in San Antonio

The residents of San Antonio have several free options to file their taxes, including the IRS’s online filing system. The IRS provides free tax preparation software for individuals earning $73,000 or less per year. H&R Block and TurboTax also offer free editions of their tax preparation software, but they are best suited for simple tax returns. Business owners or individuals with more complex filings may need to use some of their upgraded options, which come with a small fee.

San Antonio’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) offers free income tax assistance for people earning $55,000 or less. VITA uses community volunteers to help prepare the filings and provide support for certain tax credits, such as the earned income tax credit and the child tax credit.

To complete the tax filings, according to MYSA, filers must provide identification, income statements like a W-2, and copies of documents such as medical bills and mortgage interest to calculate yearly expenses.
