On March 17, former Lieutenant DeWayne Smith has reportedly retired just a day before the hearing for his termination. Smith was identified due to the documents filed to dismiss his law enforcement certification. Consequently, members of the Memphis City Council expressed their dissatisfaction that a police officer was allowed to retire before his termination was pushed through. In addition, JB Smiley Jr., the vice chairman of the Council insisted that it is not fair that the former Memphis Police Supervisor retained his retirement benefits.According to Mion, Ben Crump, the attorney for Tyre Nichols’ family, also argued that the Memphis Police Department should have not allowed Smith to avoid the consequences of his actions and even retire with benefits. He added that the authorities must do everything they can to implicate the Memphis Police Supervisor and all others who were involved with Nichols’ death.
