Newsbreak: Detective Cleared of Charges in Fatal Shooting of Robbery Suspect After Legal Investigation in Lombard, Illinois

A police detective in Lombard, Illinois, will not face charges after he shot and killed a robbery suspect who had wounded him in a shootout. DuPage County State’s Attorney, Robert Berlin, announced that Detective Ryan Postel was legally justified in his actions during the robbery investigation of a retail store on December 8th. The suspect, Pierre Thompson, was shot multiple times, including in the right chest, upper left arm, and right back, according to a report by Fox News on March 2, 2023.

During the incident, Detective Postel commanded Thompson to show his hands, but instead, Thompson raised a pistol and fired six shots at Postel and his partner. Thompson then attempted to flee the scene, prompting Postel to return fire while shouting that he had been shot. Postel was hit in his right leg and underwent surgery for his injuries, according to Fox News.

After conducting an investigation, Berlin concluded that Postel acted within the bounds of the law and used justifiable force to protect himself and his partner. The decision not to file charges comes after months of scrutiny and review of the incident.

The shooting of robbery suspects by police has been a contentious issue in recent years, with many calling for increased accountability and transparency in such cases. However, in this instance, the prosecutor found that Detective Postel’s actions were appropriate given the circumstances, and he will not face charges for his actions.
