A 17-year-old student was arrested on Tuesday after reportedly assaulting a paraprofessional who confiscated his Nintendo Switch during class at Matanzas High School in Palm Coast, Florida. According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, the student was charged with felony aggravated assault with bodily harm.
The incident began when a female paraprofessional took the Nintendo Switch away from the student during class, which upset him. Surveillance footage showed the 6’6” and 270-pound student walking quickly towards the paraprofessional and pushing her to the ground, causing her to become unconscious. The student then kicked and punched her several times while she was unconscious. Other students rushed to help the victim, who was taken to the hospital for treatment.
During the incident, the suspect was heard saying “f—k you” to one of the deputies and later saying, “I don’t want to go to jail.” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly condemned the student’s actions, calling them “absolutely horrendous and completely uncalled for.” He added that schools should be safe places for both employees and students.
Assaulting school staff is a significant offense that can lead to criminal charges and school discipline. Students should understand the consequences of their actions and respect their teachers and staff. Schools need to maintain a safe environment and hold students accountable for their behavior.
