Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that $314.4 million worth of emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits will be provided this December. These benefit allotments are expected to help roughly 1.6 million Texas families, says Flores.
Last December 2, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) was given approval by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as the administrator of SNAP. The maximum amount of SNAP benefits allowed based on a household’s size was extended for December. All SNAP households will receive emergency allotments with a minimum of $95. This additional allotment is expected to appear in SNAP accounts by the end of December. These December allotments are added to the $9 billion worth of benefits previously received by the residents of Texas since April 2020, as reported by Fischer.Who is eligible for these benefits?
According to Benefits.gov, to be eligible for SNAP, one must be a resident of the state of Texas and must have a current bank balance under $2,001 or $3,001 if sharing a household with a person aged 60 and over or a person with a disability.
One must also have an annual household income (before taxes) ranging from $17,667 for a household of one to $60,619 for a household with eight people. For a household with more than eight people, $6,136 will be added for each person.
