Huntsville, AL – A significant winter storm is set to impact Northern Alabama and Southern Middle Tennessee beginning late Thursday night, bringing snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from midnight Thursday until 6 a.m. Saturday. Forecasters predict snow and sleet accumulations between 1 to 5 inches and ice buildups up to 0.3 inches. The most significant precipitation is expected overnight Thursday into early Friday, creating potentially hazardous conditions.

Road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly, with icy patches likely on highways and secondary roads. The Friday morning and evening commutes are forecast to be particularly treacherous. Authorities urge drivers to avoid unnecessary travel but advise carrying an emergency kit if driving is unavoidable.

The Tennessee Valley region, including Huntsville, Decatur, Florence, and surrounding areas, will likely see the storm’s heaviest impacts. Power outages may occur due to ice buildup on power lines and tree branches. Residents should monitor updates from local authorities and weather services for the latest information.
