Chicago, IL – Light snowfall is forecasted to disrupt travel across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana late Thursday into Friday morning. The National Weather Service issued a Special Weather Statement for the region, warning of potential commute delays due to snow-covered roads and reduced visibility.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow will begin late Thursday night and persist through Friday morning, primarily affecting areas east of a Woodstock-to-Amboy line. Total snow accumulations are expected to range from 1-2 inches across most of the Chicago metropolitan area, with localized amounts reaching 3 inches south of Interstate 80.

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing, increasing the likelihood of untreated roads becoming slick. These conditions are likely to pose hazards during Friday morning’s rush hour. Travelers should anticipate slower traffic and allocate extra time for their commutes.

Meteorologists advise motorists to exercise caution, as reduced visibility and snow accumulation could create dangerous driving conditions. Salt trucks and plows are expected to be deployed overnight to manage the snow, but drivers should remain vigilant on secondary and residential streets, which may see slower clearing efforts.

Snowfall is expected to taper off by Friday afternoon, offering some relief for evening travel. However, NWS officials recommend continuing to monitor weather updates and prepare for changing road conditions throughout the day.
