Greenville, SC – A significant winter storm is set to sweep across Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina on Friday, bringing dangerous travel conditions and the potential for power outages. Snow, sleet, and ice are expected to impact major highways, including I-85 and I-26, during the morning and evening commutes.
According to the National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg, precipitation will begin in northeast Georgia and western South Carolina as early as 9 a.m., spreading into central and eastern areas by the afternoon. Snowfall totals of 3 to 5 inches are forecast in higher elevations, with significant ice accumulation likely in low-lying regions.
Residents are urged to act quickly to prepare for hazardous conditions. Essential supplies such as flashlights, non-perishable food, and blankets should be stocked at home. For drivers, emergency kits, including jumper cables and ice scrapers, are recommended. Travel should be avoided unless absolutely necessary.
The weight of snow and ice on tree limbs and power lines could result in widespread outages, especially in areas with ongoing storm recovery efforts. Communities near Asheville, Greenville, and northern Atlanta suburbs could face the most severe impacts.
The storm is expected to taper off early Saturday, but sub-freezing temperatures will maintain icy conditions through the weekend. By Sunday, a gradual warm-up will bring daytime highs in the mid-40s, followed by milder, sunny weather next week.
