Chicago, IL – Snowfall is expected to impact Illinois starting late Thursday night and continuing into Friday afternoon. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of slippery road conditions, particularly near and east of Interstate 55.
According to the NWS, snow accumulations may exceed 1 inch in some areas. The heaviest snowfall is likely during the Friday morning commute, with orange and red-shaded areas on the advisory map at the highest risk. These areas, including parts of Chicago, Joliet, and Kankakee, have a 70-100% probability of measurable snow.
The snowfall could reduce visibility and make roads treacherous for drivers. Residents are urged to allow extra travel time Friday morning. Commuters in areas such as DeKalb, Elgin, and Waukegan should also expect moderate snow, with a 40-70% chance of accumulation.
The advisory highlights that the snow will begin late Thursday night and last through Friday afternoon. Travelers are advised to prepare for hazardous conditions and adjust schedules accordingly. Local authorities may deploy plows and salt trucks to mitigate icy roadways, but slippery spots remain possible.
The NWS recommends planning ahead to ensure safe travel. “Allow extra time for your morning commute and drive cautiously,” the advisory states. For the latest updates, visit weather.gov/chicago.
This weather system marks the first significant snowfall of January in the Chicago region. Forecasters encourage residents to monitor conditions closely as more winter weather could develop later this month.
