Flagstaff, AZ – Northern Arizona residents should prepare for miserable conditions Thursday as bitter cold and high winds grip the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts gusts of 30 to 40 mph and temperatures well below average.
According to NWS Flagstaff, the area will remain dry for most of the day. Isolated snow showers may occur along the Mogollon Rim, White Mountains, and the Arizona-New Mexico border. High temperatures will hover in the low 30s to 40s in many areas, leaving communities exposed to freezing conditions.
Wind gusts, reaching their peak in the afternoon, will create dangerous conditions. The strong northeast winds will amplify the cold, leading to wind chills below freezing in some parts of the region. Residents in cities like Flagstaff and Show Low should expect daytime highs around 35 degrees. Communities in lower elevations, including Prescott, may reach the high 40s but will still feel the effects of strong winds.
The NWS urges residents to take precautions when venturing outdoors. Bundle up to protect against wind chills and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of strong gusts. Drivers on highways, especially near mountain passes, should watch for hazardous conditions created by blowing dust or snow.
Northern Arizona will see no significant precipitation, but the biting cold and gusty winds will make outdoor activities challenging. The miserable conditions are expected to ease by Friday, with slightly milder temperatures and calmer winds.
