Newport, NC – Eastern North Carolina residents are preparing for the season’s first significant winter weather, with snow, sleet, and freezing rain expected Friday night into Saturday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of travel disruptions as 1 to 4 inches of snow could accumulate in the region.

According to the NWS Newport/Morehead City office, the wintry mix will begin Friday evening around 6 p.m. and continue overnight. Areas further inland, including Greenville and Kinston, are most likely to see snow accumulations, while coastal towns like Morehead City and Ocracoke may see freezing rain or sleet.

The storm’s heaviest impact is forecast to occur between 9 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday. Inland areas are likely to see higher snow totals, while coastal regions may experience icy conditions. Officials emphasize that snowfall amounts will vary based on the storm’s exact track, which remains uncertain.

Residents are urged to monitor weather updates and prepare for potentially hazardous road conditions. The NWS advises limiting travel during the storm’s peak hours and having emergency supplies ready.
