UNION CITY, NJ.- Following an investigation, on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, Detectives of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Internal Affairs Unit have charged a Union City Police Sergeant in connection with filing a false report that led to a person being charged with assault.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, on Tuesday, Ruben Rodriguez was taken into custody and formally charged with one count of third-degree False Reporting to a Law Enforcement Authority. Rodriguez was processed on the charge and was released on a complaint summons pending his first appearance, which has been scheduled for Tuesday, January 21, 2025, in Hudson County Central Judicial Processing Court in Jersey City, New Jersey.
The Union City Police Department suspended Rodriguez after the Department was informed of the charge.
The charge stems from an investigation when, on August 8, 2024, Rodriguez reported being injured during an encounter with a person at the Union City Police Department. Following the encounter, the person was then charged with a charge of Aggravated Assault. A review of the police report and charging documents determined that Rodriguez’s report was incorrect and the assault never occurred.
Prosecutor Suarez commended the investigative work of the Prosecutor’s Office Internal Affairs Unit and the Union City Police Department, which led to the arrest of Rodriguez.
