Jackson, MS – Freezing rain, sleet, and snow are expected to hit northern Mississippi beginning Thursday night, creating dangerous travel conditions. A winter weather advisory has been issued for areas north of Jackson, including communities along Highway 49, with heavy snow possible in some locations.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a significant winter storm will develop late Thursday and continue through Friday morning. Northern counties, including Cleveland and Greenwood, face the highest risk of hazardous snow accumulation, while areas closer to Jackson may experience icy roads. Travel delays and power outages are likely.
Residents should take immediate precautions by insulating exposed pipes, limiting travel, and stocking up on essentials. Forecasters warn of wind chills dropping as low as the teens overnight, with the coldest temperatures occurring early Thursday morning.
Thursday’s forecast calls for increasing clouds with daytime highs near 47 degrees, followed by rain and freezing rain overnight. By Friday morning, temperatures will hover around freezing, leading to icy conditions that could persist into the weekend.
The five-day outlook for Jackson shows conditions improving after Friday. Saturday and Sunday are expected to be mostly sunny, with highs near 50 degrees. Another cold front is expected early next week, so continued monitoring is recommended.
