Blacksburg, VA – Residents across Virginia are bracing for dangerously cold conditions and accumulating snow expected to begin Friday afternoon. Temperatures will drop as low as single digits overnight, while gusty winds make conditions feel even colder.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a reinforcing blast of Arctic air will persist through Thursday, with wind chills near zero. By Friday, a low-pressure system is forecasted to bring 2–5 inches of snow across the region, especially impacting areas along I-81 and the surrounding Piedmont. Snow accumulation is expected to create hazardous driving conditions through Saturday morning.

Temperatures will remain frigid, with highs struggling to reach the low 20s on Thursday and Friday. Overnight lows will dip into the teens, with northwest winds gusting up to 30 mph. Roads could become treacherous, particularly during Friday’s evening commute. Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to prepare emergency kits for potential delays or outages.

Five-Day Forecast

Thursday: Mostly sunny, highs near 24°F, lows around 11°F.

Friday: Snow after noon, highs near 24°F. New accumulation of up to 4 inches possible overnight.
