NEWKIRK— A Ponca City man accused of attempting to rape a woman near the Newkirk Country Club is being held in the Kay County Detention Center on $100,000 bond.
Evan Jae Andrews, 23, is facing a felony count of attempted first degree rape and a misdemeanor charge of unlawful possession of a CDS.
The Kay County Sheriff’s Department reports that on Dec. 11 deputies received a report of a woman who had been assaulted near the country club. The closest deputy was near Braman so Newkirk police was asked to respond.
A Newkirk officer located the female and transported her to the station. The suspect later identified by law enforcement as Andrews, and the manager of the Arkansas City, Kan. Long John Silvers, reportedly left the scene in a white Nissan Altima with damage on the front passenger side.
On Saturday Long John Silver’s Vice president of Corporate Counsel, Tony Ellis, had a public relations firm send the following quote. “Andrews is no longer an employee at Long John Silver’s. His last day working at the restaurant was Dec. 10.” It is also noted that Andrews was not the manager during his tenure at the restaurant.
The female told officials that she had been grabbed by the hair and struck repeatedly against the ground.
The female was treated by Newkirk EMTs at the station for a broken nose, a large knot on her head, and abrasions on her face and neck. She was transported to Integris Health in Ponca City, where a deputy was waiting. There a member of the Newkirk Fire Department reportedly told a deputy that a baggie containing white powder was found on the female. It later tested positive for 1.2 grams of cocaine.
At the hospital, deputy Morgan Putnam interviewed the alleged victim.
She reportedly stated that she accepted a friend request on Facebook from Andrews because she had mutual friends with him and had a received a ride from the bar a few nights earlier.
Officials report that she admitted that she went to Wichita with Andrews and that he was meeting someone to get cocaine.
She told officials that they later drove to the area near the country club, where the pair got out of the car to look at the spillway.
The female claims when they went to get back in the vehicle, Andrews asked her to reach for money stuck under the front seat. She claims that when she stood up, he grabbed her by the hair and started yanking her around before shoving her to the ground. Andrews allegedly tried to force her onto her stomach, and spit on her.
The female told officials that she was crying and telling him to stop and that he replied, “Why?”
She told the deputy that he became exhausted and that she was able to get up and call police as he left.
The female reportedly said that the baggie of cocaine found in her possession came from the person in Wichita and that Andrews gave it to her to try.
Deputies went to Andrews home on Donald Street in Ponca City.
They report he came to the door with blood shot eyes and sweating profusely.
He reportedly told deputies that he knew why they were there and claimed that the incident was a drug deal gone bad. and that the female robbed him of his cocaine.
Andrews was arrested and transported to the county jail. Officials report that during a strip search it was determined that he was wearing a condom.
On Dec. 12, Judge David Wilkie set bond at $100,000 and ordered that he have no contact with the alleged victim or her family if released.
On Dec. 20 an initial appearance was held and the court appointed defense attorney Jarrod Stevenson to the case.
A status docket is set for Feb. 7.
