Winter Weather Advisory in Effect for Maryland and West Virginia Through Thursday

Baltimore, MD – Residents in Maryland’s Garrett County and parts of West Virginia should brace for significant winter weather through Thursday, with heavy snowfall and strong winds expected to create hazardous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snowfall rates of 0.5 to 1 inch per hour are possible at times, with total accumulations reaching between 3 and 6 inches, especially in elevations above 2,500 feet. Wind gusts up to 50 mph are expected, further complicating travel and increasing the risk of power outages.

The advisory, which remains in effect until noon Thursday, highlights potential whiteout conditions with visibilities dropping below 1/4 mile. Key routes such as Interstate 68, US-40 west of Big Savage Mountain, and US-48 near Scherr, WV, are likely to experience dangerous travel conditions, particularly overnight and during early morning hours.

In addition to snowfall, freezing fog and wind chills as low as -10 degrees are anticipated. Travelers are urged to drive cautiously and avoid unnecessary travel where possible.

Those venturing outdoors should dress in layers, covering exposed skin to prevent frostbite. For updated road conditions, residents can dial 511 for assistance.
