Syracuse, NY – Lake effect snow continues to impact Central New York early Wednesday, with significant accumulations expected through Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton, an additional 2 to 6 inches of snow is expected throughout Wednesday into early Thursday. Wind gusts of up to 35 mph are likely to create blowing snow and reduced visibility, making travel hazardous.

The winter weather advisory, in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday, includes Chenango, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga, Seneca, Southern Cayuga, and Tompkins counties. Officials warn that conditions could rapidly change within lake effect snow bands, reducing visibility and creating difficult driving conditions during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes.

Total snowfall amounts for areas under the heaviest bands could reach between 5 and 12 inches by the end of the event. Motorists are advised to slow down, allow extra travel time, and remain alert for changing road conditions.

For updates on road conditions, residents can call 511. Stay prepared and monitor weather updates as this system progresses.
