Virginia Winter Storm Warning: Black Ice on Roads Tonight, Up to 10 Inches of Snow Along I-95 Corridor

Richmond, VA – A winter storm continues to affect northern and central Virginia, bringing heavy snow, freezing rain, and icy conditions. Snowfall totals between 6 and 10 inches are expected by Tuesday morning, with some areas seeing up to 12 inches. Hazardous road conditions have prompted officials to urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow will intensify Monday afternoon and continue into the evening. Temperatures are forecast to drop to 19°F tonight, causing any remaining water on roadways to refreeze and create dangerous black ice. Residents are advised to prepare for difficult driving conditions, especially along the I-95 corridor and other major routes.

Another brief round of snow is likely late Monday evening, adding 1 to 2 inches in accumulation. NWS reports that untreated and unplowed roads may become impassable during periods of heavy snowfall. Motorists are encouraged to delay travel and monitor road conditions by dialing 511 or using local traffic apps.

Looking ahead, conditions will improve by Tuesday afternoon as snow tapers off and skies clear. Highs on Tuesday will reach 32°F, followed by sunny weather through Friday. However, temperatures will remain cold, with lows in the teens for much of the week.

Residents should stay updated with local weather alerts and ensure they have emergency supplies, including flashlights and blankets, if travel becomes unavoidable.
