Bourbonnais, IL – Olivet Alumna Honored with Prestigious White House Science Award

Bourbonnais, IL – Dr. Teresa Woodruff, a distinguished alumna of Olivet Nazarene University (ONU), received the National Medal of Science on Friday in a White House ceremony. President Joe Biden presented the award, recognizing her transformative contributions to reproductive science.

Dr. Woodruff has reshaped fertility care and reproductive health, particularly for young cancer survivors. Her pioneering work in ovarian biology and fertility preservation established the field of oncofertility, merging oncology and fertility care to improve patient outcomes globally.

“This award represents the best of what my students, collaborators and I have done together,” Dr. Woodruff said in a recent interview. “It’s especially rewarding to know that our nation values the work that doesn’t usually appear in the headlines.”

A 1985 graduate of ONU, Dr. Woodruff credits her early education for sparking her interest in science. “My education provided these fundamental building blocks that have made me who I am today, and I am eternally grateful,” she shared.

Beyond her groundbreaking research, Dr. Woodruff is known for advocating women in STEM fields and creating programs to inspire the next generation of scientists. Her career spans roles as a professor, researcher, and leader at Northwestern University and Michigan State University.

Dr. Woodruff’s achievements include founding the Oncofertility Consortium and holding over 20 U.S. patents. Her work has received global recognition, with awards from the National Academy of Medicine and Crain’s Detroit, among others.

Bourbonnais residents and the ONU community celebrate this honor, emphasizing the importance of science in addressing real-world challenges.
