In a dramatic and dangerous incident on December 17, 2024, Albuquerque police arrested Eric Brusstar, a native of Rio Rancho, after he fired rounds of ammunition along New Mexico State Road 528. The situation escalated when Brusstar, during the standoff, fired at a police helicopter that was overhead, reporting on the unfolding event.
The intense moment, reminiscent of a scene from the video game Grand Theft Auto, was captured in audio between Air Traffic Control (ATC) and the police helicopter, PD2. The exchange highlighted the chaotic scene, yet the pilots and ATC personnel maintained remarkable calmness amid the gunfire. Despite the danger, no one in the helicopter was injured, and the pilots’ composure was noteworthy in such a tense situation.

After a lengthy standoff with police and SWAT officers, Brusstar was finally arrested around 5 a.m. and is now facing numerous charges related to his actions during the standoff. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries on the ground during the incident.
This incident marks another case of gunfire directed at an aircraft in 2024, following a similar shooting in Texas, where a plane was targeted during takeoff.
