A former Coahoma County deputy coroner has been arrested on charges of embezzlement.
Markeith Mosely, 36, was taken into custody on Tuesday by special agents from the Mississippi State Auditor’s Office.
Mosley is accused of fraudulently claiming a Fuelman gas card, which belonged to the county, as his own between June 2021 and November 2023 while serving as coroner.
The state auditor did not disclose the total amount spent on non-government-related purchases, but emphasized that the case reflects ongoing efforts to combat fraud.
“We will continue to hold the line when it comes to fraud, whether it be big or small,” said State Auditor Shad White. “We will work closely with prosecutors to ensure that taxpayer money is protected.”
If convicted, Mosley faces penalties including fines of up to $25,000 and a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years.
