New Mexico is renowned for its ties to both trains and television, notably with the state being known as the backdrop for the hit series “Breaking Bad.” Another iconic television figure with connections to the state is George R.R. Martin, author of the Game of Thrones series. You may not be aware, but Martin owns one of New Mexico’s most historic railroads: the Sky Railway.
Originally known as the Santa Fe Southern Railroad, the railway became part of Martin’s legacy after the Breaking Bad train heist episode brought it national attention. Following the show’s success, the railway faced near bankruptcy, but Martin, alongside business partner Bill Banowsky, stepped in to save it from closure. Together, they revitalized the railroad, renaming it Sky Railway and giving it a unique flair.
In an effort to make the trains stand out, Martin took a hands-on approach to their design. The creative team, led by him, decided on bold, wild paint jobs, featuring a dragon and a wolf—symbols familiar to Game of Thrones fans. Martin explained, “We need to be bold, wild, and exciting, with something different up our sleeve… No one else has a wolf or dragon. We do.” These distinctive designs are still visible on the trains today.
Now known for its scenic rides through Santa Fe, the Sky Railway remains a popular attraction, offering visitors a chance to enjoy breathtaking desert views while experiencing a piece of New Mexico’s television and railroading history. For more details, you can visit their website.
