The 2024 New Mexico high school football season has concluded with thrilling championship games for classes 2A through 6A. Here’s how the action unfolded on championship Saturday:
6A Championship: Cleveland Storms to Victory
For the third consecutive year, the Class 6A title game showcased a rivalry between La Cueva and Cleveland. The Storm’s defense dominated, silencing the Bears’ potent offense until the fourth quarter. Cleveland methodically built its lead and handed La Cueva its first loss of the season with a decisive 26-8 victory. This marks Cleveland’s fourth state championship in five years.
“Going into the season, this was the one we weren’t supposed to have,” said Cleveland head coach Robert Garza. “This group of seniors came together like no other. They were a joy to coach, and it’s been an awesome year.”
5A Championship: Roswell Claims Revenge on Artesia
Top-seeded Roswell faced off against No. 2 Artesia at the Wool Bowl in a rematch of last year’s championship. Roswell capitalized on home-field advantage, avenging their previous loss with a 41-22 victory. This triumph secures the Coyotes’ eighth state title.
“We knew we couldn’t give up big plays,” said Roswell head coach Jeff Lynn. “We executed our game plan perfectly, forcing them to earn every yard. I’m so proud of these kids for sticking to the plan and delivering when it mattered most.”
4A Championship: Bloomfield’s Perfect Season
Bloomfield hosted St. Pius for the 4A crown and put on a dominant display, defeating the Sartans 62-28 to finish a flawless 13-0 season. This marks Bloomfield’s third state championship.
“It’s surreal right now, just surreal,” said Bloomfield head coach Mike Kovacs. “This is the best group we’ve had here, and I hope there are many more to come. Today, it’s all about these kids, these coaches, and this incredible athletic administration.”
3A Championship: St. Michael’s Wins a Thriller
In Santa Fe, undefeated St. Michael’s and Dexter battled for the 3A title in a game filled with dramatic plays and lead changes. Highlights included multiple long touchdowns, a kickoff return for a score, and a game-winning touchdown by St. Michael’s with just 35 seconds left. The Horsemen edged out Dexter 28-26, earning back-to-back state titles and extending their win streak to 20 games.
“This one feels great because Dexter is such a quality program,” said St. Michael’s head coach Joey Fernandez. “Our kids faced adversity, stepped up to the challenge, and made the plays they needed to secure the win. I’m so proud of them.”
2A Championship: Texico Cruises to Victory
Unbeaten Texico faced Santa Rosa in the Class 2A title game and delivered a commanding performance, achieving a 50-0 mercy-rule win. The Wolverines’ victory marks their eighth state championship.
