New Mexico State Police (NMSP) discovered a van carrying 29 undocumented individuals during a traffic stop in Socorro on Friday.
The incident occurred on I-25 near milepost 146 when officers stopped the vehicle due to an upside-down registration plate. Upon approaching the van, the officer noticed hands gripping bars attached to the inside of the windows, raising suspicions that occupants might be held against their will, according to NMSP.
The driver admitted to being paid to transport the individuals. U.S. Border Patrol arrived to assist, confirming the presence of 29 undocumented individuals inside the vehicle. Both the driver and the passengers were handed over to Border Patrol for further processing.
