How 49ers’ Nick Bosa handles stress of being defined by a stat: ‘It’s a constant battle’ (paywall)
“Bosa is an avid reader with varied interests, ranging from historical fiction to science fiction to self-help, and it often generates ideas for the day-before-game speeches he delivers to the team each week. However, reading also can temporarily free him from football thoughts, or provide valuable perspective on his job.
He’s currently reading “Ego Is the Enemy,” which, as the title suggests, deals with the value of humility and includes lessons from ancient stoics.
“It’s kind of how you react to negatives and positives in life,” Bosa said. “Getting too comfortable and complacent and patting myself on the back too much when things go good and vice versa. When things go bad, just getting back to the process. Not dwelling on the past or the future. It’s all just helpful stuff for our profession, I’d say.”
…..
“He’s probably too hard on himself,” [Trent] Williams said. “Not ‘probably.’ He’s way too hard on himself.”
Warner, an All-Pro linebacker, understands Bosa’s angst, but said he has freed himself from similar feelings.
“I do. I get it. I’ve been there,” Warner said, “but I wouldn’t say I’m stressed now by any means. I’ve eliminated all the nonsense that is stress-worthy.”
Warner, a seven-year veteran, said becoming a father this past offseason has provided him with perspective when it comes to his job. And Williams, 36, pointed to his 2018 diagnosis with a rare form of skin cancer for doing the same.
Bosa, who is single, didn’t discuss a similar life-altering moment that has changed his mindset. But he’s clearly grown since he entered the NFL filled with bravado.”
49ers rule Kittle out vs. Rams, elevate two practice-squad players
“In addition to ruling Kittle out of Sunday’s game, the 49ers on Saturday elevated tight end Brayden Willis and defensive lineman Sam Okuayinonu from the practice squad for the NFC West showdown.”
Shanahan labels Guerendo as ‘next man up’ in Deebo’s absence
“[Guerendo] has got a certain speed set that is a little different than our other backs,” Shanahan explained. “I’d compare him a little bit more to Raheem [Mostert] in the past. As [49ers running backs coach] Bobby [Turner] will say, Raheem’s an eyelash faster. But Raheem is faster than everybody — Isaac’s pretty damn close. And so that’s an impressive thing.”
Shanahan calls Jimmy G’s role in Rams’ prep for 49ers ‘way overblown’
“Probably more so between Jimmy and Matthew [Stafford] maybe even just in the locker room in general,” LaFleur said. “Anytime you got a little more information when you’ve been in the locker room and had the success that Jimmy has had in that locker room, I’m sure that there are a few things that I’m not getting told and things like that. But just having Jimmy back right now has been great and it’s a benefit.”
Saubert prepared to uphold 49ers ‘standard’ amid Kittle injury
“Saubert, who played at Drake College in Iowa about 125 miles away from Kittle, doesn’t have the receiving skills Kittle does, but he has tried to solidify his blocking.
“It’s something I really had to work on when I got to the league,” said Saubert, who was a fifth-round draft pick by the Atlanta Falcons in 2017. “Drake was obviously a very different level of football, so coming in, I had a lot to learn in that respect. But it’s something we’re always working on. It’s never easy. It just takes repetition and doing it against the best people in the world at their position.”
Kittle and Saubert have ties that go pretty far back. They both went to college in Iowa, attended the NFL Scouting Combine together and were part of the same draft class. And Saubert attended one of Kittle’s Tight End University gatherings in Nashville.
“We’ve been friends for a while,” Saubert said.
Before signing with the 49ers as a free agent in April, Saubert spent his time bouncing around the NFL. He had stints with the Falcons, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans.
Because the 49ers have an offense similar to the Texans, Saubert believed signing with San Francisco was the right move.”
