“Tendinopathy is an overuse injury and McCaffrey, 28, is coming off a season in which he led the NFL with 339 touches. The eight-year veteran ranks fifth among active players with 1,806 touches.
However, tendinopathy typically isn’t chronic and rest can allow scar tissue to form where micro tears existed. The length of that healing process can vary.
“It’s just one of those conditions where you go, ‘Oh, here we go,’ ” Gibson said. “I mean, in a year, he’ll be better. But whether it’s six weeks or 12 weeks, I don’t know. I can tell you if he doesn’t injure it further, in a year, he should be better. He should be 100%. But on the short end of this timeframe, it’s an estimate.”
Gibson said it’s logical to think that McCaffrey has at least explored other treatments that could accelerate healing. That includes platelet-rich plasma injections in which blood is spun after being taken from the arm to separate red blood cells from plasma and platelets. Gibson said McCaffrey would probably be sidelined “at least six weeks” if he had a PPR injection to ensure he didn’t have an inflammatory response.
Other options include stem-cell treatment, a “next step” beyond a PRP injection, and extracorporeal shockwave therapy, which can regenerate tissue.
“There are interventions, but it just has to go through a healing process of its own and become more mature again,” Gibson said. “Go through a process of restoring to a normal tendon. You just have to watch and wait. There’s no surgery that’s going to change it.”

“I know that one (Sunday) got away from him, which we can’t have those,” Shanahan said. “But everyone muffs one here and there. You just hope that was the end of it.”
If it wasn’t, the options to replace Cowing include wide receivers Ronnie Bell and Trent Taylor. Bell filled in last year when McCloud was sidelined for five games, but he had ball-security issues. He averaged 7 yards on 10 returns, muffed two punts out of bounds and had a fumble that was returned for a touchdown overturned on replay review.”

Aiyuk feeling ‘better’ ahead of increased 49ers workload vs. Rams
“I was happy watching tape this week,” Aiyuk said Wednesday. “I liked just coming back alive in the running game and just my feet a little better. Just having more fun….I’m just looking to take another step. We got another day of practice today, so I’m looking to get better again today. Tomorrow and Friday, and let it go on Sunday and see what happens.”
Shanahan still confident in 49ers rookie Cowing after muffed punt
