Northern Herkimer, NY – A lake effect snow warning is in effect for Northern Herkimer County, starting Monday at 4 p.m. and lasting until 7 a.m. Wednesday. Residents in the region can expect heavy snow accumulation between 6 and 9 inches, with the heaviest snowfall anticipated near and north of Route 28.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snowfall rates could reach 0.5 to 1 inch per hour in some areas. This will create hazardous travel conditions, with rapidly changing visibility and road conditions. Drivers should prepare for challenging commutes and allow extra time to reach their destinations.
The snow will arrive in narrow bands, causing significant variations in conditions over short distances. Areas under these snow bands will see reduced visibility, while locations just miles away may experience little to no snowfall. The most intense accumulation is expected overnight Monday into Tuesday morning.
Officials are urging residents to take precautions if travel is unavoidable. Keeping an emergency kit in vehicles, including a flashlight, food, and water, is recommended. Visibility can drop quickly during snow squalls, so motorists should remain alert and reduce speeds as needed.
Temperatures are forecast to stay below freezing throughout the event, ensuring that the snow will stick and potentially lead to icy roadways. By Wednesday morning, conditions are expected to improve as the snow diminishes.
