Gaylord, MI – Heavy lake-effect snow is impacting northern Michigan, with up to 8 inches of accumulation expected in some areas.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory early Monday morning for Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, and Otsego counties. The advisory, in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday, warns of treacherous road conditions due to snow-covered surfaces and reduced visibility.
According to the advisory, snow accumulations will range from 3 to 6 inches across most areas, with localized totals of 8 inches possible in specific regions. However, parts of northern Emmet, northern Cheboygan, and eastern Otsego counties may see lighter amounts between 1 and 3 inches.
Travel conditions are expected to worsen during the Monday morning and evening commutes. Blowing snow and slippery roads will likely slow traffic and increase the risk of accidents. Drivers are urged to reduce speeds and exercise caution.
Meteorologists report that cold air flowing over the Great Lakes is fueling the lake-effect snow bands, which will persist through the overnight hours. Winds may also contribute to reduced visibility, especially in open areas.
To prepare, residents are advised to keep emergency kits in vehicles, including blankets, flashlights, and extra clothing. Local road crews are working to clear main routes, but secondary roads may remain hazardous through Tuesday morning.
The National Weather Service emphasizes that motorists should allow extra time for travel and stay updated on conditions. Those in heavily affected areas may want to consider postponing nonessential trips until the advisory expires.
More updates are expected as the system progresses. For live weather alerts and road conditions, follow local authorities and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
