12 Phrases You’ll Only Understand If You Live in Alabama

There’s a language spoken in Alabama that isn’t taught in schools, doesn’t show up in textbooks, and definitely confuses outsiders faster than sweet tea runs out at a family reunion. It’s part Southern poetry, part weather report, and part completely made-up word your meemaw swore was real. If you’ve spent any time in the Heart of Dixie, you’ve likely said these without even batting an eye.

1. “Bless your heart.”

This is either the kindest thing anyone’s ever said to you… or the most passive-aggressive insult you’ll ever receive. Tone is everything.

2. “Y’all ain’t from around here, are ya?”

The unofficial welcome mat for newcomers—usually said with a smile and a side-eye.

3. “It’s hotter than blue blazes.”

Translation: Step outside and your eyebrows might catch fire.

4. “I’m fixin’ to.”

This doesn’t mean you’re actually doing something. It means you might start thinking about doing it… eventually.

5. “Roll Tide!”

A greeting, an expression of joy, frustration, celebration, or just something to yell at the grocery store. There is no wrong time.

6. “He’s about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.”

Harsh, colorful, and oddly specific. But you’ll never forget it.

7. “She’s got more issues than Vogue.”

The Alabama version of “that girl is a lot.”

8. “That dog won’t hunt.”

Used to shoot down bad ideas with charm. Equal parts Southern wisdom and polite shade.

9. “The devil’s beatin’ his wife.”

Used when it’s sunny and raining at the same time. No, we don’t know why. Yes, it’s a thing.

10. “Over yonder.”

A highly accurate unit of distance that can mean anywhere from 10 feet to 10 miles.

11. “Full as a tick.”

Not just full. Alabama-level full. Post-potluck, nap-on-the-porch kind of full.

12. “We don’t dial 911.”

Usually seen on a sign next to a shotgun rack. Translation: best behave.

If you understood every one of these, congratulations—you’re basically fluent in Alabamian. If not, bless your heart, you’ll catch on soon enough. Just bring an appetite, some humidity tolerance, and a love for college football, and you’ll be speaking the language in no time.
