Colombia Rocked by Major Earthquake: No Deaths, But Panic Spreads as Aftershocks Loom

Central Colombia was rocked by a strong 6.3 magnitude earthquake on Sunday, sending shockwaves through cities and terrifying residents. The quake hit unexpectedly, forcing people to rush out of homes and buildings as the ground shook beneath them.

Emergency alarms went off, and videos on social media showed people screaming and gathering in open spaces. It was one of the strongest earthquakes the country has felt this year, according to early reports from seismic monitoring agencies.

Where and When Did the Earthquake Hit?

The earthquake struck in the central part of Colombia, near El Calvario in the Meta Department, on Sunday afternoon. The quake occurred at a depth of around 10 kilometers (6 miles), which is considered shallow and more dangerous because the shaking is stronger closer to the surface.

The tremors were felt in major cities like Bogotá, Villavicencio, and Medellín, with some residents reporting light damage to walls, windows, and furniture falling inside homes.

No Deaths, But Injuries Reported

Authorities say that no deaths have been confirmed so far, but several people were treated for minor injuries, mostly due to falling objects or panic. Local hospitals remain on high alert.

Rescue teams have been dispatched to rural areas near the epicenter to check for landslides, structural damage, and any people possibly trapped under debris.

Buildings Evacuated, Schools Closed

Many buildings in Bogotá and nearby cities were quickly evacuated as a safety precaution. Several schools and offices have been closed until structural checks are completed.

“It felt like the whole building was moving. We ran out without even grabbing our phones,” said one office worker in Bogotá.

Government officials have urged citizens to remain calm and follow safety guidelines as aftershocks are still possible.

What Experts Are Saying

Seismologists say this earthquake was a strike-slip quake, meaning the earth moved horizontally along a fault line. These types of quakes can cause wide-spread shaking over large areas.

The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) continues to monitor the situation and warns that aftershocks may occur in the coming days, though most are expected to be weaker.

Safety Tips Shared with the Public

Officials are advising residents to:

  • Stay away from glass windows and tall buildings

  • Avoid using elevators

  • Keep an emergency kit ready

  • Move to open areas if more tremors hit

  • Report any cracks or damage in buildings immediately

Emotional Impact on Residents

The quake has left many residents shaken emotionally, especially those who lived through previous earthquakes in the region. Social media is filled with emotional messages, prayers, and videos of families holding each other tightly after the quake stopped.
