11 Subtle Ways to Instantly Annoy Anyone from New Hampshire

New Hampshire, the land of granite peaks, tax-free shopping, and a state motto that’s somehow both inspiring and mildly threatening. (“Live Free or Die,” anyone?) While New Hampshirites are known for their independence, Yankee stoicism, and fierce love of flannel, they do have a few pressure points that, if poked just right, will have them glaring over their maple syrup like you just insulted their snowblower. So if you’re looking to get on a New Englander’s nerves—without stepping on a political landmine—here are 11 subtle ways to mildly annoy someone from New Hampshire.

Ask if they live near Boston.

No. That’s Massachusetts. That’s the whole point.

Say Vermont is the “prettier” New England state.

They’ll nod politely, but their soul is screaming.

Complain that there’s “nothing to do.”

There’s hiking, skiing, leaf-peeping, and not paying sales tax. Sounds like plenty.

Call it “New Hampster.”

So unfunny. So overdone. So stop.

Ask why they don’t have tolls in both directions.

It’s strategic, it’s intentional, and no, they don’t want to hear your logic.

Say Dunkin’ is overrated.

That’s treason. Good luck finding coffee now.

Refer to it as a suburb of Maine.

Absolutely not. They’ll take this up with you on the nearest icy trail.

Complain about the snow.

They like the snow. They thrive in the snow. Winter is their cardio.

Be surprised they’re not super liberal—or super conservative.

Welcome to the land of “mind your business.”

Assume everyone’s in maple syrup production.

Not everyone… but like, a lot. And they’re proud of it.

Bring up state income tax like it’s normal.

They don’t have one. They never want one. And now you’re on thin ice—literally and politically.

Still, New Hampshirites are a good-hearted crew—once you earn their trust, which may take years and at least one snowstorm bonding experience. Just respect their space, embrace the flannel, and never, ever suggest they’re basically Massachusetts.
