Meet Texas Germans In This Quaint Little Town

In the middle of Texas Hill Country sits Fredericksburg, where German culture meets Texas style.

Though only 12,000 people live here, this small town offers plenty of surprises. Before you write it off as just another small Texas town, check out these fascinating facts that’ll make you want to plan a visit ASAP.

A Special Peace Deal with Native Americans

When German people first came to Fredericksburg in 1846, they made friends with the Comanche Native Americans.

John Meusebach, who started the town, met with Chief Castro and worked out a deal that let both groups live and work in harmony. The treaty allowed the Comanche to enter the town freely, and in return, the settlers provided them with grain during times of hunger.

Today, you can visit a special tree called the Treaty Oak (located in Hill Country near Fredericksburg) to learn about this amazing historical moment.

America’s Biggest Wildflower Farm

Just seven miles east of Fredericksburg on U.S. Highway 290, sits a farm that’s been a trailblazer for the wildflower industry.

Founded in 1983 by John and Marilyn Thomas, it now grows more wildflower seeds than any other place in America. The farm grows over 41 species of wildflowers and harvests several hundred thousand pounds of seeds each year.

Walk through fields of bright red poppies, Texas bluebonnets, and yellow black-eyed Susans. The farm also has a special garden where butterflies come to feed, plus a shop where you can buy seeds and gardening tools.

Famous for Sweet Peaches

Fredericksburg grows some of the best peaches in Texas, thanks to its special soil and perfect weather.

Local farms like Vogel Orchard (established in 1953) still use traditional methods passed down generations.

From May to August, you can find different kinds of fresh peaches along roadside stands and the Farmers market. You can also enjoy ‘pick-your-own’ peach experience at orchards like Jenschke Orchards.

A Great Place for Wine Lovers

Within 70 miles of Fredericksburg, you’ll stumble upon more than 50 different wineries. The weather here is just like the kinds in Europe (great for making wine).

In the 1970s, Dr. Ed Auler worked with the Auler family at the Texas Hill Country Wine Region, experimenting with European grape varieties.

Fall Creek Vineyards, founded by Dr. Auler, is one of the oldest ones here. Drive along Wine Road 290 for a beautiful experience at a local vineyard or visit Gillespie County (features more than 60 wineries) to try special Texas wines.

An Amazing War Museum

The National Museum of the Pacific War honors Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz (born in Fredericksburg) showcasing his role in the Pacific Theater.

Now that it’s grown into a huge museum (about 6 acres), it features the Admiral Nimitz Gallery, George Bush Gallery of the Pacific War, and other attractions. Approximately 200,000 people visit each year to see personal items from soldiers, including uniforms, weapons, and letters.

The museum also has a beautiful Japanese Garden of Peace where people can remember those who served in the war.

Strong German Roots

When Fredericksburg started in 1846, most people came from different parts of Germany, and that culture is still alive, in the old limestone buildings from the 1800s on Main Street.

The Zion Lutheran Church, built in 1853, is a notable example. Some older folks still speak Texas German, a special dialect that’s different from native German.

The town also celebrates its German background with cultural events like Oktoberfest and The Gillespie County Bundes Schützenfest (famous for hosting a traditional German target shooting competition).

A Special Rock Formation

Just 17 miles from town, you’ll find Enchanted Rock (about 425 feet), a huge pink granite dome that’s over a billion years old.

Native Americans thought this rock was magical because it made strange sounds and glowed sometimes. The space features 8 miles of hiking trails and you can camp overnight to enjoy some stargazing.

The views from the summit of Enchanted Rock are amazing, showing stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding Texas Hill Country.

Fusion Food At its Best

Main Street has over 150 shops selling all kinds of interesting things. You can buy German kitchen tools, handmade crafts, and art made by local people.

Der Kuchen Laden sells German-themed household items like baking tools, cookware, and kitchen accessories.

Fredericksburg is an official Dark Sky Community, which means it’s one of the best places to catch the twinkle.

On a clear night, you can see about 2,500 stars (lotta people claim to have), more than the 100 stars you might see in a big city. Many places to stay will give you telescopes and star maps.
