NEWKIRK — On Jan. 6, 2025, Fredrick appeared in court and entered no contest pleas in eight felony cases stemming back to 2023. In the burglary case he was sentenced to 10 years in prison with all but five years suspended. Ulrich appeared in court on Sept. 3, 2024 and entered no contest pleas to the charges and was sentenced to a 25-year suspended prison sentence.
DNA left on straws and foam cups help PCPD solve burglary; One convicted, one on the run
NEWKIRK — Ponca City police report that DNA found on straws left in foam cups at a burglary scene helped solve the case resulting in one person convicted and another on the run.
On July 18, 2024, Shane Lyle Fredrick, 20, and Max Wayne Ulrich, 57, both of Ponca City, were charged with conspiracy and second degree burglary in Kay County District Court.
Police report that officers were dispatched to the 300 block of south 13th Street for a report of a burglary.
The resident reported a Playstation, Xbox, Nintendo, marijuana, and $2,300 cash missing.
Police tested three straws found with foam cups for DNA and went to the Triple T, at 425 south 14th Street, where the drinks were purchased and obtained camera footage, which reportedly showed three subjects purchasing drinks.
Police identified one as Ulrich and another is believed to be Fredrick and obtained search warrants for Fredrick’s and Ulrich’s DNA.
Police interviewed Ulrich. He reportedly told police that he did not know the guys but that he purchased them something to drink. His DNA was obtained.
Fredrick was in custody on other charges. He denied the burglary allegations but consented to a DNA test.
The burglary victim later reported that his debit card had been used at Sonic and on Amazon. The victim’s card was used to purchase cat food on Amazon and the order was shipped to an address on south 6th Street. Police checked the address and found that it was vacant.
DNA Tests results showed that Fredrick could not be excluded as a potential contributor and that the single source DNA matched Ulrich.
Ulrich was charged and on Sept. 3 he entered no contest pleas to the charges and was sentenced to a 25-year suspended prison sentence. Ulrich’s criminal background in Kay County includes burglary, child abuse, drug charges, escape charges. In 1999 he was given a 20 year prison sentence on the child abuse charge.
Warrants are issued for Fredrick.
On June 18 he was charged with a felony count of escape or attempted escape from a felony arrest.
On Aug. 21, he was charged with conspiracy and burglary.
On Sept. 9 he entered no contest pleas and sentencing was deferred upon the completion of drug court.
On Sept. 24, three more felonies were filed against Fredrick. They are second degree burglary, conspiracy and grand larceny from a house. Bond in that case is endorsed at $50,000.
On Sept. 26, he failed to appear for drug court and another warrant with bond endorsed at $50,000 is issued.
