MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, Wyo. — A visitor to Yellowstone National Park was gored by a bison on Sunday, marking the first case of a person being injured by the species at the park this year.
At around 3:15 p.m. on May 4, a 47-year-old Cape Coral, Florida, resident approached a bison in the Lake Village area of the park and was attacked by the animal. He sustained injuries and was treated by emergency personnel.
According to park staff, the incident is under investigation and no further details are available at time of publication.
Yellowstone saw two incidents of a person being injured by a bison in 2024 and one in 2023. Bison are territorial and will defend their space when they feel threatened. Yellowstone reports that bison have injured more people in the park than any other animal. The park advises people stay more than 25 yards from bison and other large animals.
