GILLETTE, Wyo. — Gillette and Campbell County can expect seasonable temperatures this week with a chance of showers arriving Wednesday and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
Today will bring mostly sunny skies and mild temperatures, with highs reaching into the 60s. Southerly winds will become breezy across the western plains of South Dakota this afternoon. Tonight, clouds will increase across western areas, with lows settling into the upper 30s and 40s.
A shortwave of energy moving across the northern Rockies will bring an increased chance of showers to northeast Wyoming starting Wednesday. There is also a slight possibility of isolated thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon, mainly south of the Cowboy State. Rainfall amounts are not expected to be significant with the system, with the best chance for at least a tenth of an inch of rain, between 30% and 70%, focused over the Black Hills and portions of northeast Wyoming. Breezy northwesterly winds will accompany a passing cold front on Wednesday, with highs ranging from the upper 40s and 50s in northeast Wyoming.
Thursday could bring isolated to scattered light showers.
The weather pattern will shift late in the week as a ridge of high pressure moves east, bringing warm and mostly dry conditions to the region Friday through the weekend, meteorologists said in forecast discussion. High temperatures over the weekend are forecast to be well above average, reaching into the 70s and lower 80s.
Looking ahead to late Sunday and early next week, a large upper-level trough is expected to move across the western United States. This could bring another chance for showers and potentially thunderstorms to northeast Wyoming.
