GILLETTE, Wyo. — Residents of northeast Wyoming, including Campbell County, can expect a day of wet weather today as a strong low-pressure system moves across the region.
According to the National Weather Service, the system will bring beneficial rainfall, the possibility of thunderstorms and gusty winds.
The heaviest rainfall in Wyoming is anticipated in the northeast part of the state, with probabilities of a half inch or more exceeding 60% in some areas. There is also a 20% to over 50% chance of areas receiving an inch or more of rain today.
A few stronger thunderstorms with gusty winds and hail are possible, mainly east and southeast of the Black Hills during the midday and afternoon hours as a cold front pushes through. Northwesterly winds will increase behind the front, with the strongest gusts potentially reaching over 50 mph in the northwest South Dakota plains.
Temperatures across northeast Wyoming will be cooler today, with highs reaching only into the 40s in some areas. There is also a possibility of rain changing to light snow in the higher elevations of the Black Hills above 6,000 feet later this afternoon into the evening.
The precipitation is expected to exit the region later today and this evening, with winds also diminishing as the system moves to the north and east. Skies should mostly clear overnight, with patchy fog possible, particularly over the Black Hills.
Tuesday is forecast to be mainly sunny and mild, with high temperatures reaching into the 60s. However, the chance for showers returns midweek, with weaker disturbances and a cool front bringing a possibility of rain on Wednesday and Thursday, along with breezy northwesterly winds.
A warming trend is expected late in the week and into the weekend as a ridge of high pressure builds over the western United States. High temperatures should mostly be in the upper 60s and 70s from Friday through Sunday, with the possibility of reaching the 80s over the weekend. The weather pattern could become more unsettled by early next week.
