GILLETTE, Wyo. — The preliminary hearing for a man accused of recently using a handgun to shoot another man in the stomach will take place at the end of April, Campbell County court records say.
Jordan K. Morris, 22, is charged with felony attempted 2nd-degree murder with prosecutors alleging he shot a 23-year-old man in the stomach following a Stanley Avenue altercation on April 18, court documents say.
The altercation reportedly began after the 23-year-old man arrived outside a residence to retrieve a vaping device from his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle. The man was upset that the woman was not returning his text messages and allegedly used her phone location to find her vehicle, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in the case.
When the man arrived and opened the vehicle’s door, Morris allegedly became upset and exclaimed his child was at the residence with him before exiting with a handgun. The woman told officers that she tried to stop him and was watching from a window when the two men engaged in a physical fight that carried them outside her view, the affidavit states.
At least two other witnesses reported seeing Morris exit the apartment after giving him a ride there, and that he had a gun in his hand. One of them saw Morris raise the gun and fire it at the 23-year-old man while the other heard the shot, according to the affidavit.
A prior police report indicated officers were alerted through a third party about the shooting and that they intercepted the vehicle near 7th Street and Highway 59, where they began rendering aid until emergency medical services arrived. The 23-year-old man was transported for a single gunshot wound to his abdomen.
Per court documents, Morris told officers the 23-year-old man had been threatening him for several weeks and provided text messages supporting his assertions. He also said he and the woman had been in a dating relationship for some time and that the 23-year-old man was her ex-boyfriend.
Morris claimed the 23-year-old man physically assaulted him at his front door and that he followed the man to the parking lot after retrieving a firearm. Outside, he said he feared for his safety and that of his child when three people exited a vehicle, at which point he shot the 23-year-old man in the stomach, the affidavit states.
None of the witnesses reported seeing the 23-year-old man go to or attempt to enter Morris’s apartment when he was shot, per the affidavit.
The bullet allegedly damaged the 23-year-old man’s liver, which led the arresting officer to believe Morris intentionally or knowingly caused bodily injury with a deadly weapon, according to the affidavit.
Court documents tate Morris will appear for a preliminary hearing in Circuit Court on April 28, where a judge will determine if sufficient probable cause exists to send the case to District Court for further proceedings.
